A Taste of Tradition

Cornbread is more than just a side dish in Southern cuisine; it’s a staple that evokes memories of family gatherings, church picnics, and backyard barbecues. This beloved bread has deep roots in Southern history, with origins tracing back to Native American cooking. Cornbread became a staple for early settlers in the South who discovered the versatility of cornmeal. The use of cornmeal laid the foundation for what would become one of the South’s most quintessential side dish.

The Rich History of Cornbread

Cornbread was born out of necessity. Early settlers in the South relied on corn as a primary food source due to its versatility and ease of cultivation. Whether baked, fried, or steamed, cornbread became a staple in Southern kitchens, often paired with beans, greens, and hearty stews. Over the years, it has evolved into many variations, with recipes passed down through generations, each family adding their own twist.

The Allure of Southern Cornbread

What makes cornbread so popular in Southern cuisine? It’s the perfect combination of texture and flavor. The crispy, golden crust paired with a moist, tender crumb creates a comforting experience that warms the soul. Southern cornbread is often slightly sweet, but variations abound, from savory jalapeño cornbread to the equally delightful hot honey cornbread.

Golden Hot Honey Syrup Ingredients

Honey: Being the primary ingredient in the syrup, you do want a good quality honey. I personally used an organic raw & unfiltered honey for the boldest, most natural taste.

Butter: Unsalted butter is always my suggestion because it’s easier to add the amount of salt that you prefer than it is to guess the amount in salted butter. If you choose to use salted butter here, omit the amount in the recipe below or taste the syrup once cooled and adjust from there. Butter added the flavor you expect in a good cornbread and also makes the syrup velvety smooth.

Salt: Sea salt is my favorite (always), yet iodized works as well.

Black Pepper: Provides a pungent aromatic flavor that enhances the ground dried peppers used.

Red Chili Flakes: I enjoy Asian chili flakes here because I like the fact that is doesn’t have the seeds and provides a beautiful color to the syrup.

Cayenne Pepper: Added for a good punch of heat. Can be omitted, but wheres the fun in that?

Conclusion

Cornbread will always hold a special place in the hearts and homes of many. Whether you’re a Southern native or a newcomer to cornbread, Be Free Cafe’s gluten-free hot honey cornbread is a delicious way to connect with the rich history and culture of Southern cuisine. Embrace the flavors, enjoy the simplicity, and let every bite remind you of the warmth of home.
